Cove

Cove, Texas is found at the junction of Farm Road 565 and Interstate Highway 10, in western Chambers County. Houston is located just thirty-five miles away, making it a popular home to many commuters.

Cove was first named Winfree’s Cove after one of the pioneer settlers in the area, A.B.J. Winfree. The cove moniker was given to the town because of its location on Trinity Bay that afforded protection. The Native Americans were the first people to populate the area and you can still find a historic graveyard there today.

The first cotton gin in the county was believed to have been built in Cove in 1871, by William Icet. This gin was later sold in 1880 and moved to a different location, but Icet and his sons remained in the area, operating their shipyard until 1915, as well as sawmill within what is now the town of Cove.

The post office was built in 1894, and the first school was opened in 1895. More residents came into the area and built their homes. By 1920, it is believed that there were about 150 residents in Cove. In 1937, the schools were consolidated with Barbers Hills schools and the population began to decline. It was down to 40 residents by the last portion of the 1940’s.

However during the 1960’s and 1970’s this changed as large companies built plants in the area. The United States Steel Company, Houston Lighting and Power and MoBay Chemical assisted the community by offering many new jobs in the area. After this point, the population increased steadily. In 1970, there were approximately 106 residents.

Cove was incorporated in 1973 and by 1980, 645 residents lived within the city. This has since fallen a little and a 1990 estimate placed the population at around 402 residents. The companies still provide jobs for many of the residents, but the majority commute to nearby Houston and other larger cities in the surrounding areas.

There are many historical sites in Cove and throughout Chambers County. Trinity Bay has much to offer, including opportunities for some of the best fishing in the region. If you enjoy boating, water sports or just like to catch a few fish, this is a great place to rent an apartment.

You’ll be able to join a closeknit community that offers many recreational possibilities just minutes from busy Houston. If you plan to work in the large city, you’ll also find that there are many different opportunities for fun just minutes from your new home.

There are many different reasons to live in a smaller community, but the majority of residents seem to prefer the quiet atmosphere, low cost of living and low crime rates. You’ll still be close enough to Houston to enjoy the finer things that a large city can offer, but you’ll be able to return to your peaceful apartment in Cove in just minutes.
