East Bernard

At the intersection of US Highway 90 and State Highway 60, you’ll find the town of East Bernard, Texas. The town is currently located on the western side of the San Bernard River in Wharton County. However, when the town was first founded, it was located on the east side of the river.

The first home was built in East Bernard by Jethro Spivi in 1850. Since the town was originally located east of the river, it was named East Bernard. Not many people lived in the settlement until after 1859 when the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railway arrived. A new station was built on the east side of the river, but later moved to the west side in 1869. This site would later become East Bernard’s Main Street.

A post office was built in 1866, but the town did not get official recognition until 1874. This time period brought great expansion to the town, with the end of the Civil War. Many British settlers moved into the area, and they were later joined by many German and Slavic immigrants after 1880.

East Bernard had 150 residents by 1895 as well as a telegraph office, two general stores, a gristmill, and a steam gin. The first church was built in East Bernard in 1893, when German Methodists moved a church from Weimar and rebuilt it in the town. Catholic services were held in private homes until around 1905 and 1907 when the first Catholic church was completed.

The Catholic Church that is still standing in East Bernard today was built in 1925 and featured stained glass windows that were imported from Czechoslovakia, mosaics from Munich, a statue of St. Anthony from Italy and a statuary that had been carved in the German Tyrol. This church is a great example of the many immigrants that came from all over the world to settle in East Bernard.

The first school was built in 1888, and a new high school went up in 1912. In 1916, the schools in East Bernard became part of an independent school district, which were later consolidated with schools from neighboring towns in 1956. Riverside Hall was a popular dance pavilion that was located on the eastern side of the river and at one time featured Paul Whiteman.

East Bernard is not incorporated, but local business owners have formed a chamber of commerce. This chamber of commerce handles many of the duties of a city government and provides many resources for the residents. Currently, there are approximately 1,544 residents in East Bernard.
