In western Fort Bend County, TX, at the intersection of Farm Road 1489 and State Highway 26 lies the town of Orchard, TX. It is located on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe line, approximately thirteen minutes from Richmond, TX.
One of the first settlers, S.K. Cross began selling land in the area in 1890. He promoted and sold these tracts of land to German, Polish and Bohemian farmers, who were drawn to the area with reports of rich soil and the prospect of success.
Orchard got its name from the attempts to plant a fruit orchard in the area that repeatedly failed. The first post office was built in 1893 and the town began to grow. Twelve families that were originally from Akron, OH moved to Orchard and began raising their children there.
Three years later, in 1896, forty-three pupils attended the school in Orchard and it is believed that around 250 residents called Orchard home. During this time, a Methodist church was built and a general store went up to serve the residents.
The population of Orchard stayed steady from 1920 to 1970, reporting around 200 residents at various times through these years. In 1920, the town had three general stores, a drugstore, a telegraph office and even a dance hall. By 1940, there were four businesses, one church and a school located in the town. This decline is most likely due to the Great Depression.
However, after 1970, Houston began expanding and many residents moved into the area. The latest population estimate in 1990 reported around 373 residents living within the town. As the community continues to grow, it has developed into a residential community, with the majority of the residents commute to nearby Houston or Richmond.
