Near the Houston Southwest Airport, right off of State Highway 6, you’ll find Sienna Plantation, TX. Houston is located about twenty miles from the community and Missouri City is just six minutes away. Sienna Plantation is located in the eastern section of historic Fort Bend County.
In 1840, the land that is now Sienna Plantation, was purchased by Jonathan D. Waters, who was originally from South Carolina. He turned the land into a vast plantation and grew sugar and cotton. Waters also built his own wharf on the Brazos River and this wharf soon became a loading and unloading center for the shipment of commercial goods in the area.
The plantation was purchased in 1872 by Thomas W. House, a businessman from Houston. In 1913, Thomas H. Scanlan, also from Houston, purchased the estate. His daughters would later give the property to the Scanlan Foundation, which was an organization that benefited Catholic charities in the area.
During the 1950’s and 1960’s, the plantation was used for the Cenacle Retreat and was managed by the Cenacle Sisters. The name was chosen from an area of Tuscany known as Siena, which was home to many Catholic saints. This retreat ran until 1972.
In 1978, development was launched to turn Sienna Plantation into a residential community. By 1980, the Johnson Corporation began building homes and condominiums in the area. They also added a ten-mile-long levee across nearly 6,000 acres of woodlands to provide the residents of Sienna Plantation with protection from flooding. Roadways were soon built and the community began to see its first residents.
The entire community covers about 7,300 acres, making it one of the largest residential communities in the area. 2,000 acres of this land has been designated as park land, and has been left undeveloped. This gives the residents a chance to enjoy life in the country, even though they are so close to the city.
There are many different amenities in Sienna Plantation. They include a country club for the residents, an 18-hole golf course, many nature trails and an amphitheater. There are also a number of different recreational facilities sprinkled throughout the development. Currently, approximately 1,896 residents call Sienna Plantation their home.
